The Emery-Waterhouse Company of Portland, Maine has implemented a new mobile retail hardware bin labeling application that allows field service staff to easily LabelPrintprint new bin labels.  The application uses a Handheld Products (HHP) Dolphin 9500 Mobile Computer connected to a Zebra QW-320 Label Printer.  The application allows field service staff to scan on an existing UPC or SKU barcode and a new label will print immediately.  The mobile computer contains all of the pricing and item data  for a given customer necessary to work remotely.  The application was developed by BizSpeed, Inc., who is a provider of enterprise mobility solutions.

This is different than the old method for labeling when labels were printed in the warehouse and shipped out to service staff.  The old method would  require servicers to look at the product and then hunt for a matching label.  This was time consuming and error prone.  Now servicers can start at the beginning bin and scan & print labels in ordered sequence until the last bin is completed.  No more hunting for the label — Just scan, print, label, next bin.  David McCarron of Emery-Waterhouse said, “The immediate result of having a store properly labeled has been a 7% increase in same-store sales where this labeling application was implemented”.  David went on to explain how customers will commonly walk away from a purchase if the item is not clearly labeled & priced.

CompMatchAs an additional benefit of this application, the servicer can update the retail price, record the bin location quantity and perform matching to competitor items.  These changes and updates are stored on the mobile device and are electronically uploaded to the central server via secure connection using a synchronization process.  This is an improvement in time and accuracy over the old method of hand-written logs.  The synchronization process uses web-services which allow users to connect to the central server via any web connection.  During synchronization, the user will download new data files for other customers.

The mobile field data is electronically entered into the central server, without further data-entry.  This eliminates having to enter data manually from written logs.  There have been five major benefits of this new system:  Increases in same-store sales, label printing has moved from the warehouse to the store, elimination of hand-written logs and manual data-entry of data into the central server, and the overall speed at which this all occurs.  This all results in higher sales, reduced labor, and reduced errors.
